ABHA & ABDM Guide
ABHA integration for pathology labs: how it works
ABHA integration lets your lab link each approved report to the patient's Ayushman Bharat Health Account, so patients can share results with any doctor on consent. Here is how it works for a pathology lab, what ABDM expects, and what to check in your lab software.
ABHA integration at a glance
- ABHA
- Ayushman Bharat Health Account: a 14-digit health ID under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). Over 90 crore ABHA accounts have been created.
- What a lab does with it
- Captures the patient's ABHA at registration and links each approved lab report to it, so the patient can share the report with any doctor on consent.
- Prerequisite
- The lab must be registered on ABDM's Health Facility Registry (HFR).
How ABHA integration works in a pathology lab
- 1
Register the lab on the Health Facility Registry (HFR)
Every facility that exchanges records on ABDM needs an HFR ID. This is a one-time registration done by the lab owner on the ABDM portal.
- 2
Capture or verify the patient's ABHA at registration
At the front desk, the patient's 14-digit ABHA number or ABHA address is recorded against their lab record. Patients without an ABHA can still be served normally — ABHA is voluntary for patients.
- 3
Link the approved report to the patient's ABHA
Once the pathologist approves a report, it is linked to the patient's ABHA as a health record. Only approved reports should be linked, never drafts.
- 4
Patient shares the report on consent
The patient can view the report in their ABHA-linked health app and share it with a doctor or hospital by granting consent, without carrying paper copies.
ABDM milestones M1, M2 and M3: what they mean for labs
The National Health Authority certifies health software in three milestones. For a pathology lab, M2 is the one that puts reports into the patient's ABHA.
| Milestone | Role | What it means for a lab |
|---|---|---|
| M1 | ABHA creation and verification | Create or verify a patient's ABHA at registration and link it to the lab record. |
| M2 | Health Information Provider (HIP) | Link lab reports to the patient's ABHA and share them in the standard format when the patient gives consent. This is the milestone that matters most for labs. |
| M3 | Health Information User (HIU) | Fetch a patient's records from other facilities, with consent. Useful but optional for most standalone labs. |
Why ABHA integration matters for your lab
- Patients keep their reports in one place and share them with doctors digitally, which reduces repeat requests for copies at your front desk.
- Referring doctors and hospitals on ABDM can view your reports with the patient's consent, which strengthens referral relationships.
- HFR-registered labs have been eligible for per-record incentives under the Digital Health Incentive Scheme (check current terms with the NHA).
- Government health programmes increasingly expect ABDM participation, so being ready early avoids a rushed change later.
Questions to ask any LIS vendor about ABHA
- Which ABDM milestones (M1, M2, M3) is your software certified for?
- Do you help with HFR registration, or does the lab do it alone?
- Are reports linked to ABHA only after pathologist approval?
- Is ABHA integration included in my plan, or charged extra?
- Can staff still register patients who don't have an ABHA?
- Can you show the linked-report flow live in a demo?
Frequently asked questions
What is ABHA-integrated lab software?
It is a laboratory information system (LIS) that can record a patient's ABHA number at registration and link approved lab reports to that ABHA under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, so patients can share their reports digitally with consent.
Is ABHA integration mandatory for private pathology labs?
Participation in ABDM is currently voluntary for private labs, though government programmes and some state schemes encourage it. Check the latest guidance from the National Health Authority and your state health department.
Does every patient need an ABHA number to get tested?
No. ABHA is voluntary for patients. A lab can serve patients without an ABHA as usual and link reports only for patients who provide one.
Can labs earn incentives for linking reports to ABHA?
The National Health Authority's Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS) has paid HFR-registered facilities, including diagnostic labs, per eligible digital record linked to ABHA. The scheme has been revised and extended several times, so confirm the current rates and eligibility on the NHA website.
